Howard Hodgkin &
Diana Copperwhite.
day01. is very pleased to announce a two-person show featuring early works-on-paper by Howard Hodgkin (1932–2017) alongside a group of new works by Irish painter Diana Copperwhite. This is Diana’s first exhibition in Australia.
This exhibition Born in the Echoes borrows its title from an album created by a band known for genre-defining bold sounds – equal parts euphoria and solace, Chemical Brothers. Diana’s works are loaded with a similar sensory chaos and intensity, feelings expressed through memories and perceptions from the unseen world, distilled into a visual form. Paintings that sing confidently on a high chromatic scale, with visually arousing colour bars, yet recognisable figuration in the shadows, always resolving themselves at the pointy end of abstract tension.
Diana Copperwhite’s paintings conjure emotions, standing in the echo of the brilliant British colourist Howard Hodgkin through the legacy of his rhythmic vibrant strokes and disruptions of swirls in opposing directions. The ‘hue-perfect’ artist as described by Sir Nicholas Serota, who made ‘representational pictures of emotional situations’ is a welcome influence evident in her painterly language.
The exhibition at day01. comprises two of Diana’s large paintings, Architecture of Sound and Born in the Echoes, together with a series of smaller faceless anti-portraits and recent works on paper from her Vanishing Aperture series.
